Rather than showing an actual aeronaut, this engraving places a winged figure beneath a striped balloon, a fancy that reflects how artists imagined human flight after the first crewed balloon ascents in France in 1783. Images like this drew on the old myth of Icarus and on the hope that the new technology might one day let people fly under their own power rather than drift with the wind. The striped envelope also suggests how the spectacle was dressed up for popular audiences, making a scientific novelty feel like theater.
