The balloon's name, COLUMBA, is painted in large letters on its envelope, which marks it out from the many other gas and hot-air craft that rose over British fields in the early twentieth century. Two figures stand in the basket or beside it, and their clothing and posture suggest the informal, hands-on way early aeronauts handled their machines before ballooning became a regulated sport. Balloon flights in Britain were often launched from open ground such as parks and race meetings, where crowds gathered to watch. The name Columba, Latin for dove, was a favourite choice for balloons of the period, and the picture is a useful record of how these flights were presented to the public.
