The balloon's envelope carries the name H. Lachambre, and two passengers ride in the basket beneath it, which makes this an unusually personal record of a maker's work. Henri Lachambre built balloons in the Paris area during the nineteenth century, and his firm was best known for constructing the large Géant with the photographer Nadar in 1863. Images like this one show how ballooning in France moved from scientific experiment into public spectacle, with crowds gathering at launch sites to watch passengers rise above the rooftops.
