This lithograph was drawn from the basket of the great steam-powered captive balloon that engineer Henri Giffard moored in the courtyard of the Tuileries for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878. The tethered craft rose on a cable above the city, letting passengers look out over rooftops, boulevards and monuments below. Printed by the Michel firm as a color poster, the sheet pairs a bird's-eye panorama with an invitation to take the ride, and it is preserved in the Tissandier collection of ballooning material.
