The title names this balloon after the "système Vaussin," a design linked to a French inventor of the same name. It belongs to the years after the Montgolfier brothers' first public flights in 1783, when France led a rush of experiments that turned ballooning from a spectacle into a technical pursuit. Builders competed to balance lift, steering and safety, so a named system like this one shows how quickly designers were trying to improve on the first hot-air and hydrogen models. The shape of the envelope and the way it was suspended are the best places to see those ideas being tested.
