This picture records the first ascent of the balloon *Le Pôle Nord* from the Champ-de-Mars, the open parade ground in Paris. The Champ-de-Mars was a favored launch site for balloon flights in the 19th century, when aeronautics drew large crowds to watch gas balloons fill and lift off. Its inflation and departure would have been a public spectacle, with onlookers gathered around the ropes and the basket. Ballooning was then one of the most visible symbols of scientific progress in France, and scenes like this one document how the public experienced the new technology.
