This hand-colored lithograph is titled *Les ballons sortis pendant le Siège de Paris*, and its "Carte" label marks it as a map-style broadside, which sets it apart from pictures of the balloons themselves. It was printed by Grandjean et Gascard in Paris and published by M.G. Mangin, probably in the 1870s. During the Siege of Paris, from September 1870 to January 1871, Prussian forces encircled the city, and balloons were launched from within it to carry mail, passengers and pigeons over the enemy lines. The print comes from the Tissandier collection, named for the aeronaut and writer Gaston Tissandier, who flew out of the besieged city.
