Few documents capture the siege of Paris as directly as this printed roster of the balloons that lifted out of the city during the Prussian blockade of 1870 and 1871. With the capital cut off by land, balloons became one of the few reliable links to the outside world, carrying mail and passengers over enemy lines. René Dagron, the photographer and inventor named in the subject headings, was closely tied to that balloon postal service. This lithograph was issued by the printer E. Pichot in 1874, after the siege had ended, and it belongs to Gaston Tissandier's collection of material on flight.
