This lithograph, titled "Les ballons du Siège de Paris," focuses on the balloons that carried messages and passengers out of the city while Prussian forces surrounded it from September 1870 to February 1871. With the regular postal system cut off, the French sent about 66 manned balloons aloft, often with mail and pigeons that could carry replies back into Paris. The sheet was drawn and lithographed by A. Tissandier and published by E. Bulla et fils, with the printing credited to Lemercier, and it reflects how the siege made the balloon a symbol of communication and resistance.
