Jacques Alexandre César Charles and M. N. Robert are shown landing in this hand-colored etching, with spectators gathered around the craft. The two men had lifted off from the Tuileries in Paris in December 1783 in a hydrogen balloon, the first crewed flight of its kind, and the scene here celebrates that achievement. Charles, a physicist, planned the flight, and Robert, a mechanic, worked with him on the apparatus. The record dates the print only tentatively, so it is best read as a near-contemporary depiction of the event.
