The focus here is the gondola and the lower third of the envelope, the parts of the design that show how the maker meant to carry passengers and steer the craft. The record links it to plate 7 of a work associated with Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, the French engineer who proposed an elongated, steerable airship in 1785 in place of the round balloons of the day. The record gives no reliable date, and its caption data is unverified, but the tracings place the engraving around 1800, when French interest in ballooning remained strong after the Montgolfier flights of the 1780s.
