Drawn in side elevation, this engraving shows an entire balloon as a technical design rather than a scene of flight. It is tied to Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, the French engineer whose 1785 proposals for steering a lighter-than-air craft, using internal air cells and propellers, shaped later aeronautical thinking. The caption card's date of about 1800 is unverified, but the plate reflects a period when French builders were more concerned with controlling balloons than with simply letting them drift. Notice the careful outline and rigging, which show how engineers hoped to turn a novelty into a usable machine.
