Rather than the whole craft, this engraving isolates the hooks and fastenings that would have secured the rigging and car to a balloon's envelope. The plate appears to relate to a design by Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, the French engineer who proposed an elongated, steerable airship with oars and an internal air bag in 1783. The caption card dates the print to about 1800, though that date is unverified. Close studies of small mechanical parts like these show how seriously early aeronauts treated the practical problem of attaching loads to fabric envelopes.
