Lead detail: this print shows a proposed "capture balloon," with its gondola drawn in both long and sectional views, which sets it apart from the general balloon scenes on this board. The caption card dates it to around 1800, though that date is unverified, and cites plate 4 of a work by "Mensnier," probably the French engineer Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, known for his late-1780s designs for steerable airships. Sectional drawings like these show how the gondola was meant to be built, which makes the print useful to historians of early aeronautical engineering.
