Two views of one balloon hang beneath a pavilion in this plate, a front view and a side view, so the viewer can follow the shape of the envelope and the frame slung below it. The plate illustrates Jean-Baptiste Meusnier's *Détails d'un projet de machine aérostatique*, tied to his 1784 proposal for a steerable airship presented to the Académie des sciences. Meusnier's design called for a long, elongated envelope with internal air cells and human-powered propellers, which set it apart from the spherical balloons of the period.
