Silver-finned barrage balloons were a familiar sight in the sky during the Second World War, and this picture shows one hovering above a line of trees under a clear blue sky. Balloons like this were tethered aloft to make low-altitude air attacks harder, since their steel cables could tear at the wings of diving aircraft. The fins at the tail kept the envelope pointing into the wind and steady as it rode on its cable. Its quiet, almost peaceful setting against the treetops offers a striking contrast with the military purpose it served.
