A balloon built to look like a space shuttle is a striking departure from the round envelopes most people picture when they think of ballooning. Shaped balloons of this kind, often called novelty or special-shape envelopes, grew popular from the 1970s onward as manufacturers and pilots experimented with designs that could draw crowds at festivals and promotional events. The shuttle form also nods to the NASA orbiter program, which was flying its reusable spacecraft during the years when these figures took to the sky.
