This engraving presents Washington as it might look from the air, a bird's-eye view of the city's layout. It ran in Harper's Weekly in late July 1861, only days after the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, when the capital was filling with troops and anxious residents. Aerial observation was then a new tool for armies, and Thaddeus Lowe's balloons that summer were among the first put to military use. The record for this print is partly unverified, so the exact vantage point and the artist are worth checking against the magazine page itself.
