Few pictures show the barrage balloon's defensive work as directly as this one, in which crewmen in Southern England gather around the wreckage of a flying bomb that ran into their balloon's steel cable. Barrage balloons were tethered over towns, ports and industrial sites to keep low-flying aircraft from attacking and to snag bombs and missiles in their wires. The German V-1 flying bomb, an unpiloted missile, was first launched at Britain in June 1944, so the record's ca. 1941 date is probably approximate. The photograph offers a close look at the ground crews who operated and maintained these balloons.
