Eugène Godard, the Paris aeronaut named in this print's title, came from a family of balloon makers and pilots who built careers on public ascents. The lithograph shows five balloons, with two men aboard and French flags flying, a display that reflects the national pride French audiences attached to ballooning. The caption card gives no date, but the color lithograph style and the subject fit the mid-to-late nineteenth century, when Godard was active and balloon flights drew large crowds.
