Few details survive in this record beyond the scene itself: a large balloon being filled while a group of women sit near its base and men stand close by. Early balloon ascents drew crowds across Europe and America in the late 1700s and 1800s, and the work of inflating a silk envelope was labor-intensive, often requiring gas generated on site and many hands to hold the fabric steady. Images like this one show how ballooning was as much a public spectacle as a scientific or military undertaking. Look at the posture of the seated women, who appear to be waiting rather than participating, a reminder of the audience-centered nature of these events.
