Women war workers are shown cementing and inspecting the seams of a barrage balloon, the large tethered gas bags that were meant to keep low-flying enemy aircraft at bay over cities, harbors and industrial sites. The photograph dates to roughly 1941 to 1944, when American defense plants were turning out balloons and rubberized fabric at high volume and filling jobs that men had left for military service. Seam work like this demanded careful, even handling, because a single faulty join could let a balloon lose gas and fail in the air.
