Flame roars up into the mouth of a balloon envelope as the crew works to fill it, a moment that marks the start of every ascent. Hot air balloons rise because heated air inside the envelope is lighter than the cooler air around it, and the pilot controls that lift with a burner fed by propane. Ballooning grew into a popular sport and spectacle in the twentieth century, drawing crowds to launch fields where crews waited for the right wind and weather. The burner's bright blast is worth noticing, since it is the same heat source that keeps a balloon aloft once it leaves the ground.
