Fort Myer, in Virginia just across the Potomac from Washington, was the home of the Army's balloon work in the first years of the twentieth century, and this stereograph shows an inspection of a balloon during Signal Corps operations there around 1907. The Signal Corps ran the Army's aeronautical program, and its balloon companies used gas-filled envelopes for observation and reconnaissance, a role that would soon be overtaken by airplanes. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereo cards sold to households and schools, issued the image as a paired view meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. The record is based on an old caption card, so some details may have been revised over time.
