Fort Myer, just across the Potomac from Washington, D.C., was the Army's main site for aeronautical work in 1907, and this stereograph records a balloon there during Signal Corps operations. The Signal Corps had used balloons for observation since the Civil War era, and in 1907 it formed an aeronautical section that later grew into the Army's first air arm. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereo cards to a mass market, produced the card, so the scene was meant for viewing through a stereoscope in parlors and classrooms. Because the date and caption come from an older record, the exact moment is best read as approximate.
