Fort Myer, just across the Potomac from Washington, D.C., is the setting for this view of Signal Corps soldiers working with a balloon in 1907. That year the Army's Signal Corps was building its first aeronautical program at the post, and balloons served for observation and training before powered aircraft arrived there. The picture was issued as a stereograph by Underwood & Underwood, whose paired-lens cards were widely sold for home viewing and gave viewers a three-dimensional look at such scenes. The date comes from an old caption card and may have been revised since.
