Fort Myer, Virginia, was the setting for this balloon ascent, carried out under the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1907. That year the Corps formed its Aeronautical Division, and balloons were used to train officers in observation and communication from the air. The picture survives as a stereograph, one of a pair of nearly identical images viewed through a stereoscope to produce a three-dimensional effect. Underwood & Underwood, the firm that published it, sold such cards widely to American households in the early 1900s. The catalog date of c1907 is approximate, and the record notes that its caption data has not been fully verified.
