Fort Myer, just across the Potomac from Washington, was where the Army's Signal Corps worked with balloons in 1907, the year the service took on responsibility for military aeronautics. The card shows Signal Corps personnel at work on a balloon, a reminder that early aerial observation depended on ground crews and handling gear as much as on the craft itself. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold large numbers of stereoscopic views to home viewers, issued the card, so the image reached parlors as well as military readers. The date of c1907 comes from an old caption and has not been fully verified.
