This stereograph shows a balloon transport unit moving with Lord Roberts's army during its advance on Johannesburg, a stage of the South African War (1899-1902) that the British pressed hard in 1900. The British used observation balloons to scout Boer positions and terrain, and the equipment had to be hauled over rough country alongside the supply wagons. The War Photograph and Exhibition Company issued cards like this one for home audiences, who viewed the paired images through a stereoscope. The card's 1901 date places its publication after the occupation of Johannesburg.
