A balloon attributed to the Chinese army is the subject here, though the title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been independently verified. Bain's New York agency distributed news photographs from about the 1900s into the 1920s, a period when tethered observation balloons were used by many armies to watch enemy movements and direct artillery. The negative's undated record leaves its exact origin open, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of early military aviation, with its dated details still to be confirmed.
