Filling an Army balloon was a slow, carefully managed job, usually done with hydrogen or coal gas brought to the field and fed into a silk envelope while ground crews held the fabric steady. Military balloon units of the early twentieth century used these craft for observation and signaling, and the Bain News Service, which supplied photographs to newspapers from New York during those decades, often recorded this kind of work. The record gives no date for this view, so it is best read as a document of its period, when ballooning was still a practical military tool as well as a public spectacle.
