Few subjects in the Bain collection look as odd as a kite balloon, a long, sausage-shaped observation craft held aloft on a tether by a winch on the ground. The record gives no date, so this view cannot be placed precisely, but the British Army relied on these balloons to spot artillery fire and watch enemy lines, most heavily during World War I. The Bain News Service, which made these negatives, sold news photographs to newspapers, so the picture likely reflects public interest in military aviation and new technology in that era.
