This glass negative documents a British naval balloon carrier, a vessel built or fitted to transport and launch observation balloons at sea. Such ships were a short-lived step in naval aviation, when navies tested whether a tethered balloon aloft could spot enemy ships or direct gunfire beyond the horizon. The George Grantham Bain Collection, from the Bain News Service, chiefly holds press photographs from the 1900s and 1910s, so the image likely dates from that period. The title comes from the Bain caption data and has not been independently verified, so the exact vessel and date remain uncertain.
