The caption on this glass negative describes a captured French balloon, and the "Ger." label suggests it was photographed in German hands. Tethered observation balloons floated over the front lines during the First World War, spotting artillery and relaying reports to the ground, and both sides lost many of them to aircraft and gunfire. A captured balloon offered its captors a usable envelope, basket, and equipment to study. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency that sold pictures to newspapers, often left its dates incomplete, so the exact year of this image remains uncertain.
