A guarded Zeppelin at Lunéville, a town in Lorraine in northeastern France, is the particular subject here: French soldiers stand watch over an airship at a time when such craft were closely watched. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, which produced this glass negative, worked mainly in the early twentieth century, and the scene suggests the First World War, when the French military guarded captured or enemy aircraft and their hangars. Zeppelins were rigid airships designed in Germany, so their presence in French custody would have been a notable wartime development. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact circumstances should be treated with some caution.
