Labeled Zeppelin III at Luneville, this glass negative shows a rigid airship, though the Bain News Service caption that supplies the title is unverified, so the location deserves some caution. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's rigid airships, built on metal frames around gas cells, were the most prominent large dirigibles in the years before World War I, and the German army took several into service for reconnaissance and training. The Bain collection, assembled by the New York news photographer George Grantham Bain, holds many such images from the 1910s, when airships drew wide press interest as both novelties and possible military tools.
