The caption describes a visit by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin to the grave of airship crash victims, but that title comes from unverified Bain News Service notes. Zeppelin died in Germany in 1917, so the man shown may be someone else connected with airships. The Bain collection holds news photographs of aviation and ballooning from the 1910s and 1920s, and scenes of mourning like this one show how closely the public followed airship disasters. The figure's clothing and the setting are the best clues to the photograph's true date and subject.
