The caption on this glass negative names a "Count Erich V Zeppelin," though the record flags that title as unverified. The best-known bearer of the name was Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the German pioneer of rigid airships, whose craft were built at Friedrichshafen beginning in 1900. The plate comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service whose negatives document American newsmaking in the early twentieth century. Its place on a board devoted to ballooning in the United States is a useful clue to what the photographer thought was worth recording.
