The record credits this glass negative to the Bain News Service under the title Count Zeppelin, but the collection notes that the label is unverified, so the sitter is best read as the caption suggests. The name points to Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the German count whose rigid airships made him one of the best-known figures in early aviation after his first craft flew over Lake Constance in 1900. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied news pictures of public figures and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its plates reflect the wide public fascination with airships of that era.
