The caption names the subject as Count Zeppelin, the German aeronaut whose name became shorthand for the rigid airship. Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a former cavalry officer, had observed balloon reconnaissance during the American Civil War in 1863, and he later built his first large rigid airship, which flew in 1900. The Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, was a commercial picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so the image was probably made for press use. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
