Taken from a Zeppelin airship, this glass negative shows the spa town of Baden-Baden and the surrounding countryside of the Black Forest in southwest Germany, seen from above rather than at street level. Rigid airships like the Zeppelins carried passengers on sightseeing flights in the years before the First World War, and aerial views of European towns were a novelty for both travelers and the press. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that distributed news photographs in the early 1900s. The record's date is unknown, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded, which has not been independently verified.
