The stern of a Zeppelin airship is the subject here, with its tail fins and rudders that steered the long rigid hull. Dated July 1908, the negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York. That summer, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's airships drew wide press attention, as his German team pursued a rigid craft that could carry passengers and cargo. The title comes from caption data the Bain service recorded, which has not been independently verified, so the exact location and circumstances of the shot remain uncertain.
