The record lists this glass negative as showing a Zeppelin airship in flight, dated July 3, 1908, though the title and date come from caption data the Bain News Service recorded and have not been independently verified. The rigid airships built under Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin were then drawing wide attention, and their long, cigar-shaped hulls were a novelty to newspaper readers. The Bain News Service, a wire photo agency in New York, supplied pictures like this one to papers that wanted images of current events, so the plate is a useful record of how the public first saw these machines.
