The title on this glass negative, "Zeppelin L II," is a caption from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose staff supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The designation points to a German naval rigid airship, the type that grew out of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's lattice-framed designs. The record does not give a date, so the caption's accuracy is unconfirmed. Still, the picture belongs to a period when rigid airships drew wide press attention as a new form of military and commercial aviation.
