A tethered German observation balloon sits in a snowy field, with soldiers on the ground beside it. Such balloons were winched aloft on cables so an observer in the basket could watch for enemy positions and direct artillery fire, a common sight during the First World War. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, handled many wartime pictures, though the caption's title and the undated record remain unverified.
