This glass negative shows an Austrian balloon, which the Bain News Service described as being used to test air currents. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed. Balloons were a common tool for studying winds at altitude in the early 1900s, when meteorologists and aeronauts were still working out how air moved above the ground. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, supplied photographs to newspapers of that era, and its glass negatives capture the period's fascination with flight.
