Few pictures of this period show a balloon in flight with its town spread out below, and this one records the craft itself at about 3,050 feet over Winsted, Connecticut, on March 22, around 1886. The photographers, John G. Doughty and Alfred E. Moore, registered the image for copyright, and it was later printed in the September 1886 issue of *The Century*, a popular illustrated magazine that helped bring photographs of new technology to a general readership. The picture belongs to a short period when ballooning drew large crowds and newspapers and magazines were eager for images of the sky.
