Taken from a balloon at an altitude of about 3,050 feet, this view shows a section of Winsted, a manufacturing town in northwestern Connecticut, laid out far below the basket. Aerial photography was still very new in the mid-1880s, when photographers had to carry bulky glass-plate cameras aloft and time their exposures against the drift of the balloon. The image was made by John G. Doughty and Alfred E. Moore and appeared in *The Century*, a popular illustrated magazine, in September 1886. The record gives March 22, 1886 as the date, but that figure comes from an unverified caption card, so it should be read with some caution.
