Taken from a balloon at about 5,500 feet over Connecticut, this view places the camera at the level of the clouds, a vantage few photographers of the 1880s could reach. John G. Doughty and Alfred E. Moore made the photograph around March 22, 1886, and it appeared in the September 1886 issue of *The Century*, a popular magazine. Early aerial work demanded heavy glass plates and quick exposures from a swaying basket, so pictures taken aloft were rare. Readers of the day treated them as both scientific records and striking novelties.
