Few views of San Francisco after 1906 cover as much ground as this panoramic aerial, which looks down on districts flattened by the April 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed. The high vantage was rare at the time, when most photographers worked from street level, and it lets the viewer trace the scale of the loss across the city's streets and blocks. Images like this were widely circulated and helped document the destruction for officials, insurers and a public far from the city. Notice how little of the built landscape survived in the central districts.
